Protecting Our Seniors From Abuse & Neglect
Eldercare Advocate & Expert
Julie Rivers is an eldercare advocate with over 15 years of dedicated service to victims of nursing home abuse and neglect. Her journey in this field became deeply personal when she assumed the role of an unpaid caregiver during her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Julie’s career began as a patient advocate, fielding calls from distressed nursing home residents and their families nationwide. This role was her introduction to the widespread crisis in nursing homes, but it was her experience as a caregiver for her mother, who required memory care in a skilled nursing facility, that brought the severity of this crisis into sharp focus.
Taking a career hiatus to care for her mother, Julie achieved her lifelong goal of earning an MBA, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. This academic pursuit provided her with vital insights into the ethical operations of for-profit companies, especially nursing homes.
Her firsthand experience, combined with her business acumen, highlighted the rampant negligence within many facilities and its devastating impact on residents and their families.
As a staunch advocate for Alzheimer’s patients, Julie has testified on legislative measures aimed at improving Alzheimer’s and dementia care in senior care options programs. Her commitment led her to Capitol Hill, where she met with lawmakers to voice the needs of those unable to advocate for themselves.
Julie has contributed her expertise to the public discourse, having been featured in the Boston Herald, where she urged lawmakers to pass the bipartisan Comprehensive Care for Alzheimer’s Act.
Since 2018, Julie has been an active volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association, the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research. Her roles include:
